Trained Up — Better Dogs. Stronger Bonds.

About Trained Up

Built on belief, patience, and the bond between a dog and its people

Better Dogs. Stronger Bonds. — isn't a slogan. It's the standard everything here is held to.

Better Dogs. Stronger Bonds.

Our story

Some of the best childhood memories involve a dog.

For Michael and Paul, those memories inspired a simple idea: What if more families could experience the joy of growing up with a wonderful dog, without being overwhelmed by the challenges of raising a puppy?

The inspiration for Trained Up came from watching families struggle with the realities of puppy ownership. Barking, biting, chewing, housebreaking, and unwanted behaviors can quickly turn an exciting new addition into a source of stress. These challenges are especially difficult for busy families who may lack the time or experience required to provide consistent training during a puppy's earliest months.

Michael and Paul had experienced firsthand what dedicated training could accomplish while working together to train Tracker, Michael's Labrador Retriever, who became both a therapy dog and a live-find search and rescue dog.

They recognized an opportunity to apply that same commitment, structure, and consistency to preparing exceptional family companions.

Their vision was simple: Do the hard work early, so families can spend more time enjoying the relationship.

By investing in a puppy's development during its critical first five to six months, Trained Up works to establish the obedience, confidence, social skills, and household manners that make family life with a dog more enjoyable.

But the mission goes beyond training.

Michael and Paul believe that every child deserves the opportunity to experience the companionship, loyalty, and unconditional love of a great family dog. They want to help create the same lifelong memories that made dogs such an important part of their own childhoods.

Trained Up isn't just about raising better dogs. It's about helping families build stronger bonds and create memories that last a lifetime.

Michael

Michael is an entrepreneur, devoted family man, and experienced disaster response volunteer with a passion for dogs and the incredible relationships they build with people.

Together with his training partner Paul, Michael helped train his Labrador Retriever, Tracker — a certified therapy dog and a live-find search and rescue dog. Through that experience, Michael developed a deep appreciation for what dedicated training, consistency, and a strong relationship between a dog and its handler can accomplish.

Michael has raised several therapy dogs throughout his life. His mother was responsible for bringing the first therapy dog into a hospital setting at Royal Oak Beaumont in the 1990s — so the idea that a dog can change a life runs deep in his family.

Paul has spent more than three decades training dogs, starting with sporting and hunting breeds. His experience spans agility, hunting and herding trials, and obedience competitions — as well as military, police, and detection dogs.

His service work includes training service dogs for special-needs children, schools, and therapy programs, and handling search and rescue dogs. He has also worked with pet food companies to showcase what well-trained dogs can do.

Beyond his professional work, Paul is an advocate for rescue and humane organizations, rehabilitating neglected, abused, and abandoned dogs and transforming them into loving, adoptable companions.
