The Trained Up Standard
Training for life together
A family companion is more than a collection of commands. Trained Up’s focus is thoughtful preparation, honest progress, and the bond between a dog and the people who welcome them home.
Graduation depends on meeting the Trained Up Standard. Each dog’s journey is individual, and training continues at home.
The Master Command List
Commands every Companion Dog learns
Trained Up Companion Dogs are trained on the Master Command List — every behavior below is taught across a 12-week training program, with weekly assessments tracking each dog’s progress toward its goals.
Name
Looks toward the trainer when its name is called.
Sit
Places rear on the ground and remains seated until released.
Down
Lies down with chest and elbows on the ground until released.
Come
Returns directly to the trainer when called.
Stay
Remains in the designated position until released.
Leash Trained
Walks calmly on a leash without pulling.
Place
Goes to the designated bed or mat and remains until released.
Heel
Walks beside the trainer in the designated position.
Leave It
Disengages from an object, food, or distraction.
Potty
Relieves itself in the designated potty area when prompted.
Fetch
Retrieves an object and brings it back to the trainer.
Off
Removes paws from people, furniture, or other surfaces.
Settle
Relaxes calmly in the current location.
Yes
Marks a correct behavior and signals that a reward is coming.
Kennel
Enters the designated kennel when commanded and remains inside until released.
No
Stops the unwanted behavior when instructed.
No Bark
Stops barking when instructed.
No Bite
Stops biting or mouthing people, clothing, or objects when instructed.
